Many people surrounding the West Point basketball program felt that something special would happen in the 2013-14 season.
They were right. The West Point Green Wave is headed to the North State semi-finals and will not have to leave the city limits.
With all five starters returning from a strong 2012-13 season, West Point High School Assistant Principal Kendall Pickens knew that an opportunity to host the MHSAA Class-5A North State tournament would be an award and a possibility. Pickens’ bid to the MHSAA landed the tournament in West Point.
“Coach (Brad) Cox asked me to put the bid in (this year). I knew with how great our boys were playing, they had a really good shot at Jackson,” Pickens said, explaining the reasoning behind the bid. “I wanted our guys to have fighting chance to make it at home.”
The West Point Green Wave (26-5 overall) hosts the Clarion-Ledger No. 1 and defending MHSAA Class-5A state champion Callaway of Jackson at 7:30 p.m. tonight at West Point High School. The tournament opens with a match-up between the Vicksburg Gators and Center Hill Mustangs at 6 p.m. tonight.
