Basketball season is coming up fast. This Saturday night, the West Point hoops teams will be traveling to Maben to take on Louisville and East Oktibbeha in the West Oktibbeha Jamboree.
The boys team will be under new leadership this year, as Brad Cox starts his first year as head coach of the team. Cox says that this is a team that has been aching to hit the court against an opponent.
‚ÄúThey‚Äôre definitely ready to get some games under their belt,‚ÄĚ Cox said. ‚ÄúThere‚Äôs really only so much you can tell in practice. When you get out there and that scoreboard comes on, you really get to see some things that you need to work on.‚ÄĚ
Cox says that the group he has at the present has been putting in extra hours getting prepared for the season.
‚ÄúWe‚Äôve been working hard,‚ÄĚ said Cox. ‚ÄúWe‚Äôve got seventh period PE, and we‚Äôve been practicing in-school with short practices. A couple of weeks ago, we actually got to start practicing after school.‚ÄĚ
Those members of the team are waiting for six others to join them after the football season finishes out, something that might not happen for several weeks.
‚ÄúWe‚Äôve been practicing for a while with the guys that I have,‚ÄĚ Cox said. ‚ÄúI don‚Äôt have the whole team yet, because we have six guys who play football.‚ÄĚ
According to Cox, the team he’s got right now should be able to hold their own on the court.
‚ÄúWe‚Äôve got several guys who can definitely finish and transition,‚ÄĚ Cox said. ‚ÄúWe‚Äôve got a couple of shooters on the outside who can shoot. Our weakness is our inside game, especially until football is over.‚ÄĚ
Until the other six join them, the Green Wave players are going to have to approach certain aspects of the game from a group perspective.
‚ÄúOne of the things we talk a lot about is rebounding, especially until we get those football players,‚ÄĚ Cox said. ‚ÄúWe can‚Äôt rely on one person to rebound, just because we‚Äôre not very tall right now. We‚Äôll have to rebound as a team and make sure that‚Äôs a group effort.‚ÄĚ
The boys will tip off for the first time at 2:30 on Saturday. They will play a half with Louisville, before letting the girls play a half, and they will return to the court at 3:30 for a half against East Oktibbeha.
‚ÄúWe played Louisville this summer, and they‚Äôre definitely athletic,‚ÄĚ Cox said. ‚ÄúThey‚Äôll get after us on defense, and they‚Äôll play very hard and physical. It will be a good test for us.‚ÄĚ
The season will open November 4, at home, against East Oktibbeha.
