On Thursday night, the Lady Wave played one of their better games of the season so far. West Point played host to Okolona and defeated the Lady Chieftains 55-39. West Point had excellent bench play as the subs scored a combined 23 points. Qiayon Bailey led the Lady Wave against Okolona with 23 points. Also leading in scoring were Alexis Gates 9 points, Tyshia McCurry with 6 points, and Anqulisha Evans with 5 points.
Friday night, the Lady Wave were outmatched by Starkville as the Lady Yellow Jackets never trailed to West Point. The Lady Wave played a stronger second half, but it was for naught because the lead was already too great to overcome. Starkville was the victors on the night 66-37.
Both teams needed to find their rhythm during the first quarter, and by the midway point the Lady Wave only trailed 7-4. But a strong close to the quarter for Starkville saw the Lady Jackets enter the second quarter with a 17-8 lead. Qiayon Bailey scored all eight points for West Point showing her importance for the Lady Wave offense. During the second quarter, West Point had a hard time truly staying involved as the game stayed in favor of the Lady Jackets. At halftime, Starkville had extended their 9-point lead to 21 and the score read 46-25.
West Point came out of the halftime interval with a little more confidence and asserted themselves a little bit more. Yet, the Lady Jackets were already in too much control and closed out the game with a final score 66-37.
â€śIt just goes back to being young, we just need to find that confidence to believe in ourselves.â€ť said Head Coach Kendall Pickens about his Lady Wave dealing with a strong Starkville, â€śAt halftime we realized we could play with them but it was too late.â€ť
Scoring for the Wave on Friday night was Bailey with 24 points leading the way. Also Shamaya Lyles put up 5 points, and Evans, McCurry, Gates, and Alicia Witherspoon all put up 2 points.
The Lady Wave remain at home to take on Noxubee County on Tuesday night December 4. Tip-off is set for six oâ€™clock.
