West Point girls beat Okolona, fall to Starkville

December 1, 2012

On Thursday night, the Lady Wave played one of their better games of the season so far. West Point played host to Okolona and defeated the Lady Chieftains 55-39. West Point had excellent bench play as the subs scored a combined 23 points. Qiayon Bailey led the Lady Wave against Okolona with 23 points. Also leading in scoring were Alexis Gates 9 points, Tyshia McCurry with 6 points, and Anqulisha Evans with 5 points.
Friday night, the Lady Wave were outmatched by Starkville as the Lady Yellow Jackets never trailed to West Point. The Lady Wave played a stronger second half, but it was for naught because the lead was already too great to overcome. Starkville was the victors on the night 66-37.
Both teams needed to find their rhythm during the first quarter, and by the midway point the Lady Wave only trailed 7-4. But a strong close to the quarter for Starkville saw the Lady Jackets enter the second quarter with a 17-8 lead. Qiayon Bailey scored all eight points for West Point showing her importance for the Lady Wave offense. During the second quarter, West Point had a hard time truly staying involved as the game stayed in favor of the Lady Jackets. At halftime, Starkville had extended their 9-point lead to 21 and the score read 46-25.
West Point came out of the halftime interval with a little more confidence and asserted themselves a little bit more. Yet, the Lady Jackets were already in too much control and closed out the game with a final score 66-37.
“It just goes back to being young, we just need to find that confidence to believe in ourselves.” said Head Coach Kendall Pickens about his Lady Wave dealing with a strong Starkville, “At halftime we realized we could play with them but it was too late.”
Scoring for the Wave on Friday night was Bailey with 24 points leading the way. Also Shamaya Lyles put up 5 points, and Evans, McCurry, Gates, and Alicia Witherspoon all put up 2 points.
The Lady Wave remain at home to take on Noxubee County on Tuesday night December 4. Tip-off is set for six o’clock.
