West Point gearing up for baseball season

February 25, 2013

West Point’s head coach Buddy Wyers feels this team may have the right chemistry. The chemistry which can give experience to younger players and put wins in the win columns. It will be this chemistry that will help the Green Wave find victories in schedule that is full of challenges.
Already getting the season under way, West Point had a great showing in Columbus as the Diamond Wave played abbreviated games against Caledonia and Hamilton in a baseball jamboree. Coach Wyers pointed to a good showing from his young pitching staff that picked up their first true varsity pitch counts.
In baseball pitching always come before batting, and for the Wave this statement is very true. West Point will expect big outings on mound from senior right-hander Tez Lane as he will play the role of ace for the Wave heading up the rotation. After Lane, Wyers is not fully sure how his rotation will look as he is sorting his three left-handers in the bullpen. Yet with three lefties, it seems like a good problem to have even with their youth.
While the pitching will be top priority, West Point knows that there will have to be runs on the board for them to get the wins. Wyers felt that base running will improve as the season progresses but that it will all come down to learning the strategy. Coach Wyers expects good hitting from Freddie Reed in his final year for the Wave.
Wyers also praised his junior catcher Bruce Barclays, who has been a very coachable player and has started since his freshman year.
The Wave will have to fight hard in district though as the top contenders in the 5-A classification reside in district 2. West Point shares the district with New Hope, Oxford, and Saltillo, teams that have made deep runs into the playoffs in prior seasons. Coach Wyers described district games as playoff games and must wins. The Wave will kick off their baseball district against in West Point on Tuesday March 19.
The Wave will have their first home game on the year hopefully Tuesday against Caledonia. First pitch is set for 6:00 to begin varsity action.
