Since 2004, Maxpreps, a national high school athletic website in affiliation with CBS Sports, has compiled schedules, statistics and scores for high school athletic programs across the nation. In those 10 years, Maxpreps has provided rankings of teams in each state and also on a national level, based on school size, through a computer system.
For its 10th anniversary of compiling stats, Maxpreps released its “20 most dominant football teams in Mississippi” on its website Friday. The West Point Green Wave hold the No. 3 spot behind No. 1 South Panola, the Wave’s Thursday, Aug. 28 opponent, and No. 2 Meridian, a program West Point faced in its spring game this year at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville. No. 4 Wayne County and No. 5 Olive Branch complete the top 5.
Maxpreps’ staff said the rankings are based on a points system. If a team is ranked No. 1 in Maxpreps’ end of the season poll for Mississippi, the team is rewarded 25 points. The 25th-ranked team is rewarded one point. Teams are awarded 30 points for winning a state title and 15 points for finishing as a runner-up in their respective classifications.
