Though scheduled to face Winston Academy, the Lady Wave opened up the Immanuel Christmas tournament against the host Lady Rams of Immanuel Christian School in the early morning game that tipped off at 9:45 a.m. Thursday.
West Point opened the first quarter with great controlled defense and outstanding half-court offense, allowing for the Lady Wave to open up an early 7 point lead. The Lady Wave never looked back after the first quarter, and absolutely dominated Immanuel with their largest lead at 24 points during the fourth quarter. West Point cruised to an easy victory 52-29.
“We have restarted our season, and our girls are buying into it,” commented Head Coach Kendall Pickens after a satisfying win, “we just need to continue to work on execution and doing things right before January and district play picks up.”
The Lady Wave came out during the first quarter and set the tempo of the game. Once the Lady Wave had set the tempo, Immanuel was unable to answer the great defensive play and well ran half-court offense of West Point, allowing the Lady Wave to take an early 9-2 lead by the middle of the first. The Lady Wave absolutely dominated on defense and it showed on the scoreboard as West Point ended the quarter ahead 11-4.
West Point slowed the second quarter down giving them better looks in their offensive sets. The Lady Wave and Lady Rams both went scoreless through the first few minutes of the quarter, but the drought was ended by a West Point lay-in extending the West Point lead. By the midway point of the second, the Lady Wave were getting further ahead, leading 14-4. West Point used their depth from the bench to rest the starters, and outlasted the Lady Rams. At the halftime interval, West Point found themselves way ahead 22-8.
As the third quarter opened up, the Lady Wave were satisfied to let the pace of the game to crawl by, while extending their lead even further. The slowed down game did not help Immanuel find their way back in the game as West Point ended the third with a 35-16 lead. The fourth quarter looked similar to the third as the Lady Wave outplayed Immanuel all over the court. West Point broke the half-century mark with just over a minute to go adding to the successful game. At the final buzzer, the Lady Wave were the victors 52-29.
A new attitude has come over the young Lady Wave squad after the district victory in Saltillo. West Point will hope to continue their success on Saturday as they take on the strong Heritage Academy Lady Patriots. The game on Saturday is still a part of the Immanuel Christmas Tournament, and should be another great test for Coach Pickens and his Lady Wave.
