West Point crushes Saltillo 62-0

West Point wrapped up the Class 5A Region 1 championship on Friday, as the Green Wave shut out the Saltillo Tigers 62-0. The win improves West Point to 10-0 on the season.

The Green Wave wasted no time jumping out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter. West Point’s Brandon Lairy put the Green Wave on the board first when he made a one-handed interception and returned it for a score. Touchdown runs by Archie Jones, Chris Calvert, and Marcus Murphy would make up West Point’s early barrage.

Murphy scored on an 89-yard run in the second quarter to put the Green Wave ahead 35-0 and Calvert would add a 67-yard scoring run before coach Chris Chambless pulled his starters from the game, leading 42-0.

West Point would tack on three more scores in the second half as the clock ran continuously due to the Green Wave’s lead. Brandon Harris ran for a 17-yard touchdown, followed by a 43-yard Jimothy Mays touchdown. The final West Point score would come on a six-yard Dantariyus Cannon run.

Murphy ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries, while Calvert added 80 yards two touchdowns on three carries. Jimothy Mays also finished with 90 yards and a score. Jason Brownlee caught two passes for 47 yards.

Brandon Lairy, Tray Brownlee, and E.J. Bush each corralled interceptions for the Green Wave.

West Point will host the Lewisburg Patriots next Friday, as the Green Wave looks for an undefeated regular season. Lewisburg is 6-4 on the season and sits in sixth place in Region 1.
