After Friday’s big rivalry win over Starkville, the Green Wave returned to the court to take on Noxubee County. The Wave were in a tight affair, but were able to pull away in the fourth quarter winning the game 73-62.
“I was worried about how we would start the game,” commented Head Coach Brad Cox, “Two big rivals Starkville and Noxubee County in a row; I just did not know how we would come out tonight.”
Juan Davis opened up the scoring for West Point in the first quarter with a slam dunk. Yet by the middle of the quarter, the Tigers were up 11-9. Noxubee closed out the quarter, outscoring West Point 9-4 to enter the second quarter 20-13. The Green Wave were able to answer Noxubee’s first quarter with a strong second quarter. Peair Howard led the way for the Wave in the quarter, and helped end the half with West Point leading 36-33.
“I have come off a loss in football,” said Senior Guard Howard, “As a Senior, I want to do whatever it takes; if it is scoring points, diving on the floor, I will do it for this team.”
Once again West Point opened up the third quarter with the first two baskets allowing the Wave to extend their lead. Yet a strong Noxubee team kept themselves in the game, and by the middle of the quarter West Point only led 43-40. At the end of the quarter, it was all level at 50. West Point though proved to be the better ball club. The Wave became more patient on the offensive end of the court and two Davis three-pointers pushed West Point out to a 10 point lead. The Wave outscored Noxubee 23-12 in the quarter allowing West Point to win 73-62.
Leading scorer for West Point was Demarius Calvert with 18 points, A.J. Jones and Davis both contributed with 11 points; Tre Williams and Howard had 10 points as well. Diquan Ewing, Tony Craddeth, and Lyndon Johnson all had 4 points.
West Point continues their winning streak and adds another tally in the win column. The Wave will get to play Aberdeen Friday night in Aberdeen. The game against Aberdeen will be West Point’s first true road game. Tip-off is set for ten minutes after the Girls’ Varsity game.
