A West Point child drowned Sunday afternoon while playing in the water with his family Sunday afternoon at the Tombigbee River in Lowndes County.
Landon Henson, 3, of West Point was pronounced dead about 4 p.m. Sunday at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, according to Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant.
Merchant said Henson’s family had launched a boat and gone upriver before stopping at a sandbar. He said the kids were playing in the water and sand, and the family lost track of Henson.
“They didn’t see him around and began looking for him,” Merchant said. “He liked to play in the sand and on the hill, so they looked for him there before locating him in the water.”
