West Point baseabll eyeing next level

February 28, 2011

One jamboree and one Classic down, and everything is looking up for the West Point Diamond Wave baseball team for the 2011 season. Last year, it wasn't until April 1 that the Green Wave got to play an actual game on their home turf.
They made sure they would not repeat that this year, when they hosted their Classic this past weekend.
Overall, everything seems more upbeat about West Point's young baseball team. They're a year older, and they are winning early-on.
“When we played our jamboree, we were behind in both games, going into our final at-bat,” said West Point head coach Buddy Wyers. “In both games, they did what they had to do to come back to win or tie it. In the past, it was easy for us to just pack it in if we were behind, but not now.”
West Point started the weekend out with a 10-5 win over Shannon. The Green Wave led for most of the game that included a double from senior Tommy Keys. Will Harrell, another senior on the crew, got a double to go along with a single and two walks.
Catcher freshman Bruce Barclay got a hit, along with Freddie Reed, a sophomore.
On Saturday, Reed capped off a big second inning against East Oktibeha, with a three-run home run over the left-field fence.
Dalton Davis threw a perfect game over three innings, including six strikeouts.
“These guys really enjoyed hosting a Classic,” Wyers said. “When we got done playing the 11 o'clock game, there were still some of our guys who hung around afterward to watch the other games. That's what you like to see.”
West Point is slated to play the Titans again today, but this game will be weather-pending. The Green Wave are scheduled to play in the Hatley Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
