West Point’s advanced 18-U tennis team serving up victories

June 28, 2011

The West Point Advanced 18-U tennis team have been serving nothing but aces all summer.

In five matches this season, West Point is 4-0, dropping only two sets in the first series against Columbus 3-2 in their first meeting of the season.

The other three matches have been shutouts.

“We have a great team of young players,” head coach Julia Ready said.  “The team works very hard to try to win every game and I think this strategy has helped them to be undefeated so far. They are all very busy with different activities but have managed to fit tennis in.”

The eight person mixed roster which includes John Willis Stevens, Anna Ready, Conner Baird, Will Kelly, Emily Turner, Jessica Cole, John Wesley Williamson, and Kimberly Kelly have won 227 games this summer, losing only 80 and winning an average of nearly 57-per match.

Last Sunday’s match up with Starkville on the road was no different, sweeping the competition 5-0 overall.

In boys singles, Baird, making his singles debut this summer, needed a tie breaker to defeat Lewis Maynard 62, 4-6, 1-0 while Ready topped Carolina Berryhill 6-1, 6-1in girls singles. In boys doubles, Baird and Stevens teamed up to defeat James Raymond McKell and Logan Crosland 6-3, 6-4 and in girls doubles, Cole and Kelly won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 over Ashley Albritton and Kara Elizabeth Coble. In mixed action, Kelly and Williamson defeated John Gavin Buffington and Mikala Addison Taylor in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
