Wave to play district games at Oxford tonight

January 14, 2013

It was a difficult challenge for the West Point Green Wave to pick up a win Saturday against the Corinth Warriors. The Wave battled Corinth, a perennial power in north Mississippi 4-A, in Ecru at the North Pontotoc High School “Kings of the Court” tournament. A game that needed more than regulation to decide a winner, the Wave were on the wrong end of the scoreboard with an overtime loss to the Warriors 63-56.
Though a win over Corinth could very well have been a highlight for West Point’s 2012-2013 basketball season, the Wave know their are more important games on hand this week, starting tonight against the Oxford Chargers. In the last district 2 5-A game, West Point fell, in a dismal performance, to the Saltillo Tigers 72-58 at Saltillo on December 18.
Tonight’s opponent, Oxford, also had a bad start to their district 2 campaign. An away trip to New Hope Friday January 11 ended with a 77-67 loss to the Trojans and an 0-1 district record. The Chargers are a very tough team and will hope that they will also be able to pick up a district 2 win.
It will not be an easy game for the Wave as Oxford holds a very strong home court advantage. West Point has only beaten the Chargers in Oxford once since both teams were placed in the same district. That only victory came last year at the district 2 tournament championship game against Oxford.
West Point’s head coach Brad Cox will hope he will be able to make it two wins in a row in Oxford but understands it will be a tall order to fill. The Wave will need to bring their “A” game and have complete performances from every player on the roster to defeat the Chargers tonight.
The Wave’s game is set to start ten minutes after the Lady Wave and Lady Chargers finish squaring off.

Lady Wave look to pick up second district win against Oxford girls

It was a good Friday night for the Lady Wave against the Lady Chieftains of Okolona. Only leading 29-22 at halftime, West Point used a 31-5 second half to cruise to an easy road win 60-27.
Helping the Lady Wave to victory was Alexis Gates who has played great basketball in the past couple of weeks for West Point. Gates contributed Friday night with 33 points making her the leading scorer for the Lady Wave. Also putting in a great performance was offensive catalyst Qiayon Bailey, scoring 17 points against the Lady Chieftains.
Now the Lady Wave will return their attention to district 2 5-A play after last week’s two non-district games against Louisville and Okolona. West Point was victorious in their first district game against the Saltillo Lady Tigers 50-48. With that first win back in December, the Lady Wave currently hold an undefeated record in district 2 at 1-0. West Point now will take that undefeated record into enemy territory as the Lady Wave take on the Oxford Lady Chargers tonight.
In Oxford’s previous district 2 game, the Lady Chargers were defeated by a very strong New Hope team 79-35 on the road Friday January 11. Though sitting with a 0-1 record in district, the Lady Chargers have been a very strong offensive team known to put a lot of points on the board. On Tuesday January 8, Oxford defeated Bruce 80-30 and have had many wins similar to that one earlier this season.
The trip to Oxford will be no easy task for the Lady Wave but the girls will definitely be very focused as head coach Kendall Pickens will have done his homework on the Lady Chargers. West Point understands the importance of district games and will hope to be successful in Oxford against the Lady Chargers.
The Lady Wave’s game is set to tip-off following the junior varsity boys’ game in Oxford.
