It will likely be 100 degrees when the West Point Green Wave football team takes the field for the second time on Wednesday.
The scheduled 4:30 practice will go on as planned, according to head coach Chris Chambless, who is trying to get his team ready to defend the 5A state title this fall.
“We are going to practice everyday to get better,” Chambless said of this week’s agenda. “We’re going to work on blocking, tackling and execution on all aspects of the game.”
The Green Wave will be doing this in arguably the hottest weather West Point has seen all summer. On Monday, temperatures reached 103 degrees by 1 p.m., and it will likely remain over 100 degrees until Thursday.
“We’re going to drink a lot of water and hydrate,” Chambless said on combatting the heat. “We can’t get out of it. They’re going to have to play in it so we’re going to practice in it.”
Practice started last Monday morning for the Green Wave, as well as the other teams in the area. West Point did morning practices last week, and they began this week with the same approach.
By Thursday, the team was dressed out in full pads, hitting and blocking just as they will be on opening night, August 20 against Shannon.
During last week’s practices, all of the area football players were treated to pleasant mornings and bearable afternoon practices. This week’s heat wave will be a good test for the players.
“When they can walk away from one of our practices, it makes them feel good,” Chambless said. “They don’t think anyone else works as hard as they do, and that’s a good thing confidence wise.”
Today, temps will get up to 101, according to forecasts, dropping down to 100 for the high tomorrow.
On Thursday, slight relief will come in the form of mid-90s temperatures for the rest of the week.
