Marcus D. Ward, vice president for Institutional Advancement and executive director of the Alcorn State University Foundation Inc., along with being a West Point High School alumnus, is keynote speaker for the West Point High School academic achievement awards banquet. The banquet is 6 p.m. April 4 at The Civic. High school students who have an average of 90 or above for the fall and spring semesters this year are invited to attend, according to Robert Smith one of the coordinators for the event.
“We try our best to have former West Point students to be our speakers for the banquet,” said Smith. “We are very pleased to have Marcus Ward come and speak. We want West Point alumni to inspire the students to understand they can reach their goals through education. We have sponsored the academic achievement banquets for students grade 9 through 12 for more than 30 years. Janie Merchant started the event. She taught school and then orchestrated the banquet.”
Consecutive achievers, those who have kept a 90 or above average from grade 9 through 12, speak at the Smarty Party, the achievement luncheon for grades 7 – 8 at Fifth Street Junior High, said Smith. The Smarty Party is noon April 4 at The Civic.
