Hebron wins nailbiter at home From Staff Reports
Hebron won its first game of the season in exciting fashion Friday night, relying on some savvy decision making to defeat Benton 25-24.
Junior Daniel Lawson was first to make it to the end zone in the second quarter for Hebron on a two-yard touchdown run. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt was no good. Senior quarterback JoJo Pearson was up next with a 34-yard scoring scramble. Again the conversion was no good. Benton fought back in the second quarter when Joe White broke through the Eagles' defenses for a three-yard score. White also scored on the two-point conversion, afterward to close the half 12-8. Benton's Clark Jackson kept the pressure on Hebron in the third with a 10-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion. Bucky Shipp followed with another three-yard score and successful conversion. In the fourth quarter, Pearson again found his way to the endzone on a three-yard run. This time the Eagles went for one and Tate Cutshall's kick was good to bring the score to 22-19. Needing a big play, Hebron got one when Will Watkins broke loose on a 73-yard touchdown run. After the two-point conversion failed again, the score stood at 25-22. With 30 seconds left on the clock in the fourth quarter, Hebron found itself facing fourth-and-six on their own 31. Rather than punt the ball or risk a turnover on downs with plenty of time for Benton to score a touchdown, Pearson ran around his own backfield for as long as he could to take time off the clock, finally kneeling in his own end zone to give Benton a safety with eight seconds left. Hebron chewed up those final eight seconds on the ensuing kickoff and the game ended 25-24. Pearson finished the night with 91 yards rushing on 11 attempts, went 1-for-2 passing for 30 yards and had 25 return yards for 146 total yards and two touchdowns. Lawson finished the night with 79 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown and Watkins had 114 yards on 18 attempts and a touchdown. Darrell Collier led the defense with four solo tackles and four assists. Mark Vaughn, Jacob Crow and Watson each had four solo tackles and one assist. Cutshall and Mitch Fondren each had three solo tackles. Hebron will travel to Booneville this Friday to play New Site.
