Lamparter shows patrotism every holiday

What better way to show patrotism than to let "Old Glory" wave on the Fourth of July?
Since 1967, the Lions Club of West Point has been responsible for hanging flags at local businesses. In return for the year of service each business gives the Lions Club $20 which goes towards the Sight Foundation to provide hearing aids and glasses for people in the community that need them.

According Mary Ann Lamparter, flag chairman she starts early in the morning displaying the flags and picks them up late in the evening. Currently the Lions Club provides flag service for more than 50 businesses.
The United States Flag is a symbol of patrotism. Congressman Francis Hopkinson seems most likely to have designed the flag and some historians believe Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress, made the first one.
In 1912 neither the order of the stars nor the proportions of the flag was prescribed. Flags dated before this period sometimes show unusual arrangements of the stars and odd proportions, these features being left to the discretion of the flag maker.
In 1777, an order to establish an official flag for the new nations passed the first Flag Act: "Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of 13 stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a field of blue, representing a new Constellation.
In 1912, an executive order of Pres. Taft established proportions of the flag and provided for arrangement of the stars in six horizontal rows of eight each, a single point of each star to be upward.
In 1959, an executive order of Pres. Eisenhower provided for the arrangement of the stars in seven rows of seven stars each, staggered horizontaly and vertically. Six months after, Eisenhower provided for the arrangement of the stars in nine rows of stars staggered horizon tally and eleven rows of stars staggered vertically.
Lamparter has been displaying the flag for four years and still going strong. Her patriotism keeps the flags flying on holidays.
"I have a very patriotic belief in flying the flag especially during the holidays and on July the Fourth," said Lamparter.
Any businesses are interested in receiving the service can call Lamparter at 295-8610.
