Jan Wray, an employee of West Point Light and Water Department, has been suspended indefinitely after her husband, William, was seen driving a city-owned vehicle in Tunica last week.
Jan Wray was in Tunica to attend payroll software training Nov. 19 - 20, when another city employee spotted William Wray driving a city vehicle. Mayor Scott Ross suspended Jan Wray late Monday afternoon. Ross could not be reached for comment. Wednesday afternoon, Randy Jones, chief administrative officer for the city, would not comment on the Jan Wray's suspension, stating doing so would be “improper.” According to the personnel policy of the city of West Point, “certain city employees have been furnished with a means of transportation while on the job and/or 24 hour call. Theses city-owned vehicles are not to be used for personal business.” Jan Wray's suspension is not the first time city officials have had dealings with the Wrays. The Clean-up Committee, acting on behalf of the city, cleaned the area around Bumper to Bumper, in an auto garage owned by the Wrays, in May of 2006. On Oct. 10, 2007, Judge Howard ruled in favor of the Wray's. Howard found there was no appeal hearing held before the Planning Commission prior to the city workers cleaning up the Wray's property. The court found the City of West Point neglected to follow its own ordinances and procedures. Clay County Circuit Court ordered West Point to pay the Wrays $7,500 in reimbursement and attorney’s fees. Bumper 2 Bumper was one of the 24 businesses forced to comply with a city sign ordinance banning portable billboards from parking lots implemented this year prior to the Prairie Arts Festival and Mississippi State University's first home football game. The portable sign of Bumber to Bumper is currently displayed in the front window of the business and reads: “What would happen if I got a DUI, Mr. Mayor,” a reference to rumors claiming Ross evaded a DUI charge. None of the city's selectmen would comment on Jan Wray's suspension.
