Opinion: The best football team in the state is in your backyard
Friday, 20 November 2009
By Kenneth Mister/Daily Times Leader

Everything seems to be going right for the West Point football team.

The Green Wave have won 11 straight games.

They've shut out three opponents in the last month.

And now they're in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs, two games away from a state title.

All the Green Wave need now is your support when West Point hosts Pearl tonight at 7 p.m.

"It's real homefield advantage when you get your fans to show and give you support," said West Point coach Chris Chambless.  "We need them to be there and be loud"

Those who haven't been out to see the Green Wave in action are missing the chance to watch, unarguably in my mind, one of the most dominant (if not the best) team in Mississippi.

West Point has outscored opponents 171-19 over the last five games.  They lead Class 5A, Region 1 with 375 total points while only allowing a league best 135 points over 12 games.

Need another reason to come watch West Point destroy Pearl tonight?

Those of you who would like another reason to bask in the glory of being the "King of the Golden Triangle" should come take a peek at the Green Wave.

Over the last six years, West Point has more wins than Starkville and Columbus combined.

Seriously.

West Point has won 64 games.

Starkville has won 32.

Columbus has won 23.

That comes to a total of 64 for West Point and 55 for the rest of the Golden Triangle.

Let's branch out a bit.

High school football powerhouse Meridian has produced 67 wins over the last six years - only three more than West Point.

But Meridian also has 15 losses over that time period.

West Point has 13.

On another note, it doesn't make a difference what your reason is for attending tonight's game.

Just be there and be LOUD.
