Green Wave set to take on Pearl
Thursday, 19 November 2009

Daily Times Leader

The West Point Green Wave football team is inching closer and closer to their ultimate goal - a state title.

West Point dismantled Canton 36-0 last week in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.  Now, the Green Wave have to find a way to handle Pearl when they come to town on Friday.

"They run a pretty good offense," West Point coach Chris Chambless said.  "They have three guys that can hurt you - fullback, quarterback and tailback.  And they also have two 6-foot-4 receivers.  They have weapons everywhere.  We have our work cut out for us."

Like West Point, the Pirates like to keep it on the ground.  Pearl attempted only two passes last week in a 28-14 opening round win over Oxford.  They rushed for 293 yards.

Against Canton, West Point ran for a total of 371 yards and five touchdowns, including four Jacoby Lee scores.

Canton, however, bottled up Mississippi State commit Michael Carr.  Opposing team's make it worse on themselves when they focus solely on Carr, Chambless said.

"We're going to run the football, so they better focus on the run game," he said.  "We're going to run the football week in and week out.  They did take Mike away last week but we were still able to keep it on the ground and get 371 yards."

Like the Green Wave, Pearl uses three running backs.  Pearl's Zach McKee, Devante Nichols and AK Travis combined for 291 of their 293 yards.

A successful offense scheme is the best way to defend the Pirates, Chambless said.

"As long as we can keep it on the ground, that's the best defense we can have," he said.

West Point will also have to cut down on their turnovers.  The Green Wave committed eight penalties for 65 yards against Canton.

"You never want a lot of penalties," Chambless said.  "You're going to get some sometimes.  A lot of it has to do with the guys in stripes.  We hope to minimize some penalties (this week)."

Expecations

Chambless also spoke about the expectations surrounding his team.  West Point's last state title was in 2005 after a 17-15 over Wayne County.

"(Expectations) are not hard on me." he said.  "I like that.  It means everybody wants (the team) to win.  I'd rather be at a place that wants to win than a place that don't care.  And this place certainly cares."

West Point's future

A West Point loss would mean the end of the road for Green Wave's seniors.  West Point has 18 seniors including Carr, Curtis Virges and Xavier Hogan.

Chambless, however, isn't worried.

"We seem to replace (seniors) every year for the last 12 years I've been here," he said.   So, I think we'll be okay."

Kickoff will be Friday at 7 p.m.
