Lady Wave get win at Nettleton, boy's fall 72-65

The West Point basketball team was handed their second loss of the season Tuesday as the Green Wave fell 72-65 to undefeated Nettleton.

West Point (1-2) was led by senior Lakin Ford with 17 points and eight rebounds.  Ford, however, fouled out late in the game.

Ford absence, however, wasn't the only thing that factored into the Green Wave's loss.

"We had 32 turnovers," West Point coach Winston Varnado said.  "We were lucky to only lose by seven."

West Point also loss outside threat James Caldwell, who had 10 points before leaving the game with a twisted ankle.

"We loss our only two players with playing experience," Varnado said.  "That hurt us."

Now, the Green Wave will have two weeks off before traveling to face Kemper County on Dec. 1.

The layover comes at the right time, Varnado said.

"Our guys need a break," he said.  "We only have to play about two more games without the football players.  Hopefully, then they can give us the experience we need."

Sophomore Daryl Thomas scored 15 points while Cortez Malone added 10 points.

Lady Wave

The West Point Lady Wave basketball team escaped Nettleton on Tuesday with a 65-59 victory.

Point guard Kelsei Ewings paced the Lady Wave with 23 points.  Senior center Kourtney Crowley added 18 points.

West Point won despite a change in their lineup.  Nekeisha Walker and Wilma Davis (10 points) stepped up nicely, West Point coach Jemmye Anne Helms said.

West Point was without senior Yakira Edwards due to an ankle injury, Helms said.

Both West Point teams will have the next two weeks off to prepare for their Dec. 1 game against Kemper County.
