West Point faces rare opponent in playoff game
Friday, 13 November 2009

West  Point football player Jamarius Tallie (13) reaches for a pass against New Hope.  West Point will host the first round of the playoffs tonight against Canton.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The West Point football team has won ten straight games.  The Green Wave also haven't scored less than 20 points during their winning stretch.  Over the last month, West Point has blanked two teams while only allowing 19 combined points in their other two matchups.

Boasting a No. 2 ranking in the 5A poll, there aren't many people who would bet against West Point.

And tonight most likely won't be an exception when the Green Wave host the opening round of the playoffs against Canton.

Canton (4-7, 4-3 District), who lost their first five games of the season, defeated division foe's Yazoo City, Neshoba Central, Provine and Lanier to capture a playoff position.

West Point has defeated Canton 93-6 over their last two meetings.  The Green Wave last defeated the Tigers 54-6 in 2005.

Although the odds are stacked highly in their favor, the 10-1 West Point team is staying grounded, senior Michael Carr said.

"We're going to play every team like they're the No. 1 team in the nation," he said.

And although Canton doesn't have a winning record, numbers don't matter at this point, West Point coach Chris Chambless said.

"It's the playoffs, so everyone is tied up," he said.  "It's a new season, so anything can happen.  We don't look at records now that the second season has started," he said.

The Tigers will be facing a Green Wave team who has only gotten better as the season winds down.  Last week, West Point almost got their third shutout in the last four games after a 37-7 victory over Hernando.

West Point's success has come due to a matter of prepartion, Chambless said.

"We've been prepared real well," he said.  "A lot of it has to do with confidence.  We've really gained a lot of confidence in the past few weeks.  And that helps.  We're going to take that confidence into the game and hope that helps."

Last week, Canton handed Lanier their eight straight loss after a 20-7 victory.  Tigers running back Jacorey Ousley rushed for 213 yards in the game.

Like West Point, Canton likes to keep it on the ground, Green Wave nose guard Tommy Keys said.

"They can run," Keys said.  "They have some fast running backs."

Whatever the Tigers gameplan is, they'll have to deal with a Green Wave defense who isn't known for giving up much.  Since giving up 30 points to Oxford earlier in the season, West Point opponents average a mere 4.75 points per game.

Chambless said he has been proud of his team's performance.  That, however, won't matter come 7 p.m. tonight.

"We realized that if we want to keep playing, we have to win," he said.  "There is no second place in a playoff game.  There is no tomorrow."

Potential Matchup

If West Point wins tonight, they will face the winner of the Pearl/Oxford matchup.  West Point defeated Oxford 33-30 in a their last matchup on Oct. 9.

West Point has not faced Pearl (8-3, 6-1 District) in recent years.
