Ford, Crowley give Toppers more than they can handle

West Point basketball player Lakin Ford knew what he had to do.

Being the lone senior on a Green Wave team filled with sophomores, Ford knew his teammates leaned on him for guidance.

And he didn't let them down.

Ford dominated the paint as he pounded for 20 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks as West Point defeated Houston 70-63 on Tuesday.

"I came out more aggressive," Ford said.  "I didn't want to start the season off with two (losses)."

And Ford made that extremely clear from the tip off.

Ford scored six points in the first quarter, all coming off dunks.

While Ford took care of the inside game, junior James Caldwell lit up the perimeter.  Caldwell connected on five attempts from the arc, while adding 19 points.

After being up 31-26 at the half, West Point extended its lead to 16 after the third period.  A late fourth quarter spark by Houston lightened the lead to seven.

Ford, however, would prove to be too much as he blocked two Toppers' shots late in the game to seal the victory.

West Point coach Winston Varnado said last week's 78-39 loss to Starkville was expected.

"We played an experience team," Varnado said.  "Starville is loaded.  And they beat us like they supposed to."

With an inexperienced team, Ford has been forced to shoulder most of the load.  And he has stepped up to take that responsibility, Varnado said.

"If you look out there, we have have sophomores," he said.  "And five sophomores who played.  So, that made a big difference.  We had one guy who had playing experience - Lakin Ford.

"(Ford) is really gifted," Varnado said.  "He played in a shadow behind a lot of good guys and now he's stepping up.  He has to lead this team because he's the only senior we have that's playing.  And he's doing what he needs to do."

West Point is now 1-1 on the season and will be on the road to take on Nettleton on Nov. 17.

Lady Wave

The West Point Lady Wave basketball team bounced back from a season-opening loss to Starkville to defeat Houston 59-56.

After taking a 43-31 lead going into the fourth quarter, West Point allowed Houston to creep back into the game.

The Lady Toppers took the lead 52-50 with nearly two minutes left.  Two Kelsei Ewings free throws, however, sealed a West Point victory.

Kourtney Crowley, who was held to only seven points versus Starkville, exploded for 24 points.  Ewings added 17 points while Yakira Edwards scored six.
