The West Point High School boy's basketball team got off to a rough start Saturday in their season-opening loss to Starkville.  The Green Wave fell to the Yellowjackets 78-39.

Without key players like Michael Carr, Vontarrius Dora and Gary Hughes, who are still playing football, the Green Wave was forced to start a younger group.

West Point senior forward Lakin Ford came out with high-enegry.  It, however, would fizzle down as Starkville's Jacolby Mobley Edward Towsel caught fire.

Mobley and Towsel combined for 37 points.

After keeping pace with the Yellowjackets through the first few minutes, West Point found themselves in a deep hole.  The score stood 28-12 at the end of the first quarter and increased to a 19-point deficit by halftime.

Ford led West Point with 10 points.  Junior Daryl Thomas gave the Green Wave a spark off the bench by scoring nine points.  Daryl Thomas added seven points.

Girl's game

The West Point High School girl's basketball team also kicked off their 2009-10 season Saturday.

Despite a late-game spark, West Point fell to Starkville 63-58.

The first half belonged to junior guard Kelsei Ewings.  She scored 19 points in the first half.

It, however, would not be enough with senior Kourtney Crowley in foul trouble for most of the game.

Ewing finished with 29 points.  Crowley scored seven points.  West Point senior guard Yakira Edwards also had a good night.
