The Clarksdale Wildcats gained -7 total yards Friday night in a 27-0 loss to West Point. No, that’s not a misprint. The Wildcats were unable to gain any positive yards throughout the entire game. Clarksdale (3-7) was forced to punt the ball seven times and was hurried by a nasty Green Wave defense all night. West Point senior defensive tackle Curtis Virges said he was proud of his team’s effort. “We did fairly well in the first half,” he said. “But in the second half I love we way we got to the quarterback.” First Quarter West Point got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter when a 58-yard drive, which included a 27-yard Michael Carr reception, was capped off with a four-yard Xavier Hogan scoring plunge. Clarksdale, who punted the ball twice in the first quarter, gained only seven yards in the opening quarter. Second Quarter West Point’s defense didn’t waste any time creating a turnover. Gary Hughes intercepted a Tavin Taylor pass to start the period. After the team’s traded punts, West Point gave the Wildcats a heavy dose of their hard-nosed rushing attack. Six consecutive rushing attempts set up a 16-yard Jacoby Lee touchdown scamper. With a little over a minute left in the first half, the Green Wave drove down to the Wildcats 2-yard line but a Justin Cox fumble ended the half. Third Quarter After the team’s traded punts to start the second half, West Point went back to the basics - running the football. In a eight minute drive, West Point ran the ball 16 consecutive times. The lengthy drive, however, ended on the Wildcats 13 Fourth Quarter The fourth quarter belonged to West Point running back Lakenderic Thomas. He scored two touchdowns in the final period. His fist score came on a one-yard dive early in the fourth quarter to give the Green Wave a 19-0 lead. A two-point conversion run by Cox made it 21-0. Following a Clarksdale punt, it took only two plays for the Green Wave to strike again. After a incomplete pass intended for Carr, Thomas broke through a group of Wildcat defenders and scored from 44 yards out. Statistical Outlook West Point gained 373 toal yards on the night, including 333 on the ground. Thomas led all West Point running backs with 157 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Hogan, who had been nursing a sore leg, gained 57 yards and touchdown. Hogan played with intensity, West Point head coach Chris Chambless said. “We’re not in the business of trying to ruin kids career,” he said. “But he got better and he felt like he was 100 percent this week. So, we went with him. His mind told him he (could). And when his mind tells him he can, he can. Lee added 38 yards and touchdown on only six carries. Cox went 3-of-8 for 40 yards. Clarksdale’s quarterback Taylor was extremely ineffective. Taylor went 2-of-15 for 9 yards. Defensively, West Point was led by a host of players including Virges, Justin Bobo, Brandon Edwards, Gary Hughes, Deismon Robinson, Jeremy Cannon and Vontarrius Dora. Next Up West Point will be closing out their regular season Friday when they host Hernando.
