The West Point Green Wave football team seems to be doing everything right.
They've won eight straight games. They recently moved up to No. 2 in the Class 5A poll. And they sit at the top of their division.
And the Green Wave plan to keep it that way.
West Point (8-1, 5-0) has two games remaining and will continue to play their starters in both games.
"We play to win," West Point head coach Chris Chambless said. "That's just how we approach each game."
The Green Wave will be hosting conference opponent Clarksdale (3-6, 2-3) tonight. Although the Wildcats have not experienced much success this year, West Point won't overlook the team that gave New Hope all they could handle in a 3-0 loss last week.
"Although their record don't reflect it, they're a good team," Chambless said. "We have to come out with intensity and play our game."
And playing their game has catapulted West Point to one of the best teams in the state. Maxpreps.com ranks West Point as the No. 6 team in the state.
Last week in a 28-12 win over Saltillo, West Point used a variety of running backs and gained 210 yards on the ground.
One of the newcomers to the Green Wave's rotation has been junior Stefon Branham. Branham, who had only played sparingly earlier in the season, gained 121 yards in an Oct. 16 shutout over Lake Cormorant. He also carried the ball ten times against Saltillo.
Branham has worked hard to get to this position, West Point assistant coach Lee J. Grisham said.
"He's a hard-working running back," he said. "He runs the ball hard in practice and we got into a situation the last few games where he has gotten a chance to play. And he's doing just like he does in practice - running the ball hard."
Along with Branham, the Green Wave boasts three additional running backs who have been known to get the job done: Xavier Hogan, Lakenderic Thomas and Jacoby Lee.
Branham is up next, Grisham said.
"He's the next one in line," he said. "He's just behind three really good running backs. But anytime we can get him in is good for us."
