The Hebron Lady Eagles softball team ended their 2009 campaign on Sept. 29 in the north state tournament in Cleveland, Miss.

The Lady Eagles (13-11) lost two of three games in the double elimination tournament.

First Game
In a game that was scoreless until the fifth inning, the Eagles came away with a 7-4 victory over Benton Academy.  Hebron would get its first score when a left field double by Magen Tapley advanced Chloe Tapley home. With a 1-0 lead, the Eagles scored two more runs before Benton would answer.

Benton tied the score up in the sixth inning when they put three runs on the board.  With the score deadlocked and the 90 minute time limit expired, the game went to the international tie breaker.

At the top of the inning, the Lady Eagles were unable to score.  So, they put the game in the hands of pitcher Chloe Tapley.  And she did not disappoint.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Tapley struck out a Lady Raider batter to end the threat.

Hebron began its scoring route at the top of the eighth inning when Taylor Lancaster was safe on an error.  Afterward, a deep hit to centerfield by Cathryn Moore scored Lancaster and Prysilla Skelton.  Magen Tapley then got in on the eighth inning action when she singled and brought home Moore.  An Alaina Hill got the last Hebron runner home.

With the Lady Eagles up by four, Benton had one last chance to win the game.  However, with two outs Chloe Tapley struck out a Benton batter to end the game.

Chloe ended the game with 11 strikeouts while only allowing one hit.  At the plate, she was 2-of-3 and one RBI.l  Hillary Arnold added four hits for the Eagles.

Despite an injury in the sixth inning, Tapley and the rest of the team finished the game successfully, Hebron coach Cass Tapley said.

"Chloe got her pitching hand hurt in the sixth on a play at the plate," he said.  "She battled back but Benton ended up tying the game at three."

Despite a change in the gameplan, the Lady Eagles fought hard for the victory, Cass Tapley said.

"I abandoned the small ball game there in the last inning," he said.  And Cathryn came through in those two runs.  Then Magen, Alaina, and Hillary followed that up with all of them moving the ball.  Credit the girls they finally came up with the hits when they had to."

Second Game
The Lady Eagles were shutout in their second game 5-0 against Bayou Academy.  They allowed the first three Lady Colts batters to get on base by way of errors.  Hebron's mishaps gave Bayou two runs.

The score remained 2-0 until the fourth inning when Bayou put up three additional runs.

Hebron was held to only one hit.  The tournament started to take its toll on the Lady Eagles, Cass Tapley said.

"I had decided before the game that if things didn't look great for us then I was going to try and save our pitcher," he said.  "A one-day, eight team, double elimination tournament is tough and if we lost this game we were going to have to win three in a row to get into the championship would get us to the state tournament.

Chloe Tapley struck out seven batters in over three innings pitched.  Lancaster finished the game for the Lady Eagles.  Hebron's only hit came from Victoria Ferguson in the sixth inning.

Final Game
The Lady Eagles saw their 2009 season come to an end with a 4-3 loss to Greenville Christian.  Like Hebron's first game, the contest was scoreless for most of the game.

Greenville Christian put up four runs in the top of the fifth inning by way of a walk, but, and two singles.

The bottom half of the inning saw the Lady Eagles quickly respond.  Hebron scored three runs following singles by Lancaster, Moore, Magen Tapley, Hill, and Arnold.  However, they were one run short.

Cass Tapley credited Greenville's experienced players for their outstanding play.

"They have seven seniors," he said.  "So, I knew they weren't going to lay down for us for what would have been their last game.

Seven Lady Eagles had one hit each.  Chloe Tapley had 12 strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Although Hebron finished short of their expected goals, Tapley said he is proud of his team and expects an even better season next year.

"The whole time the girls always gave me great effort and attitudes," he said.  "Everybody will be back next year and I think with a few of them being seniors we will have a little more sense of urgency about each game."
