Coach Varnado: State will get by Washington

By Jason Browne
Daily Times Leader

West Point head basketball coach Winston Varnado has an admittedly biased perspective on Mississippi State's chances against 13th-seeded Washington today in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Portland, Ore.
But at the same time, he sees his son's team from a coach's perspective. And that perspective tells him the Bulldogs are playing their best basketball of the season at the right time.
If they stay as hungry as they were en route to a shocking SEC Tournament victory, Coach Varnado says SEC Tourney MVP Jarvis Varnado and the rest of the crew can make it past the 4th seeded Huskies.
"If they go in with the same attitude and not just play like that for the SEC championship [they can beat Washington]," said Varnado. "Sometimes teams aren't as hungry [beyond their conference tournaments]. If you're hungry, you've got a chance in [the NCAA] tournament."
Just as the Green Wave put their best teamwork performances on the court late in their season, Varnado says the Bulldogs are gelling and playing their most fluid ball of the season.
"If you've got a point guard and a big man on the same page, you can do some things. Dee Bost is playing well. Phil Turner is playing big, even though I don't think he's 6-foot-1. Kodi Augustus has changed his mindset. Everybody wants to win," said Varnado.
Then, of course, there's young Varnado.
Jarvis Varnado was named All-SEC for the second consecutive year and cemented his place as one of the SEC's all-time best shot blockers.
"For the family, it's something you'd read about in a book," said Varnado of his son being named All-SEC. "Tony Delk, from Haywood County, Tenn., (the Varnados' home) did it. But you don't expect someone from your family to go out and do it. It's hard to believe it's your kid doing it."
Beyond State's development, Coach Varnado says he's not sure how the Bulldogs will match up with the Huskies.
"If their name aint Mississippi State, I haven't followed them," he said.
The elder Varnado was in Tampa, Fla., to witness his son's team take the SEC title, although he got lost and missed their first game.
He says the performance they put on entitled them to more than a 13th seed.
"They're not really a 13 seed. The NCAA is treating them like a mid-major. I don't think the NCAA expected them to go, so they messed it up. Mississippi State wasn't supposed to beat South Carolina," said Varnado.
Despite the seeding, Varnado says the Bulldogs' heart and determination will carry them past Washington and on through the second round to the Sweet 16.
If that's the case, he says he may have to take some vacation time to head out West and catch the show.
"If they win the first two, I'm going to [Glendale] Arizona. I've got to go," said Varnado.
Mississippi State takes on Washington today at 3:45 p.m. The game will be televised on CBS.
