Friends of the Bryan Public Library are having their annual Bake Sale and Raffle, Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the Esther Pippen Meeting Room. Bake sale items are available at 10 a.m. until they are all gone. Raffle tickets are available at the Bryan Public Library for $1 each. "We normally have the Valentines Bake Sale and Raffle on Feb. 14," Lucille Armstrong, president of Friends of the Library said. "But this year, Valentines Day is on Ash Wednesday, which is a solemn event with the start of Lent. We decided to have it on the day before this year. Betty Carpenter will be out and about with her little red wagon selling baked goods on Commerce Street and Main Street."

The Friends of the Library, Bake Sale and Raffle is a fundraiser to allow the group to continue to support the Bryan Public Library.

"I've done some research and found out public libraries all over the nation are suffering from government cutbacks," Armstrong said. "It isn't just libraries in Mississippi. The Bryan Public Library is too important to our community not to help where we can. So buying raffle tickets or buying some yummy cookies or cupcakes is something everyone can do to help our library."

Members of Friends of the Library and other supporters, donate baked good, candy, cakes, cookies and other treats that are sold to raise money for the library. Raffle tickets are $1 each and there will be at least 15 items that can be won.

"We've had a lot of donations this year," Armstrong said. "Some are old favorites and for some this is the first time they have donated items. We want to thank all of them for being so generous and willing to help the Friends of the Library."

"We are waiting to hear from some other businesses," Armstrong said. "But this is what we have so far and we are thrilled with the response we've had. We'd love to encourage gentlemen to come by the library and pick up some raffle tickets to win their sweetheart something nice."

Proceeds from the Bake Sale and Raffle and other fundraisers by Friends of the Library, go toward the Summer Reading Program, buying new books for the library, providing much needed materials and other projects.

"Friends provided the screen and projector at the library," Armstrong said. "The scanner in the Lucile Miller Local History Room and we help with repairs at the library."

Most libraries in Mississippi are in dire straits due to legislative budget cuts. The Bryan Public Library provides free services, such as, free WiFi, free computer access allowing patrons to fill our job applications online, free DVD borrowing and much more. Supporting the Bake Sale and Raffle, supports the Bryan Public Library and allows them to continue to provide these much needed services to the community.
