A county inmate escaped the Clay County Detention Center early Saturday morning before being caught later in the day. Depriest Gray, 30, was being held on a court order and had appeared in Clay County Circuit Court last week and was awaiting transport back to the Mississippi Department of corrections.
Gray was caught by law enforcement about 6:15 p.m. Saturday in Starkville, according to Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott.
This was the second time Gray has escaped from the Clay County jail. Scott said Gray pulled a strip of metal out of the jail shower and used it to break through a light fixture in the ceiling.
“He worked a while on getting that done, and we're going to be doing some welding up there to seal that problem,” Scott said.
Scott said the Clay County Sheriff's Department was assisted by other local law enforcement agencies, the Mississippi Department of Corrections and the U. S. Marshals.
