The Green Leaf flower and gift shop suffered extensive damage Monday evening after a white SUV sitting at Sprint Mart rolled backward right into the front of the store, but no one suffered serious injuries.
The accident happened shortly after 6 p.m. The driver, Napoleon Davidson, who reportedly had an asthma attack during the time of the accident, told officers he stepped outside of the vehicle and by the time he realized it was rolling backward it was too late to catch it and stop it before it went crashing into the shop.
West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said it is unclear if the vehicle jumped out of gear after an attempt to park it, but the cause of the accident remain under investigation.
Davidson was checked out on scene by paramedics but was not transported to the hospital.
Clay County Coroner Alvin Carter, Jr., who owns the Green Leaf with his wife Beverly, said the store is open for business, and customers can use the back door entrance or call the store for orders.
“The biggest thing is that no one was injured,” Carter said. “It could have been my family, or it could have been clientele. We're keeping our heads up, picking up the pieces and moving on.”
