Two West Point citizens died from smoke inhalation as a result of a residential fire Monday morning on Lone Oak Circle.
The 911 call came in about 10:30 Monday morning that the house at 2020 Lone Oak Circle was on fire, and that there were two people inside. Clay County Coroner Alvin Carter said that Jack Golson, 84, and his wife, Sarah, 80, were extracted by emergency personnel and taken to North Mississippi Medical Center-West Point, where they were pronounced dead of smoke inhalation.
"Mr. Golson was in the house, and Mrs. Golson had stepped out and went back in, and they both became entrapped," Carter said.
West Point Fire Chief Ken Wilbourne said firefighters had to enter the house through a bedroom window.
Carter said no foul pay was suspected, but that the cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Monday.
