Reassurance that disaster victims in West Point and Clay County will still have the services of the American Red Cross came Monday to the Clay County Board of Supervisors by Pattie Tucker, director of the Northeast Mississippi Red Cross chapter.
Consolidation of the Golden Triangle branches of Red Cross occurred this past summer in an effort to sustain Mississippi’s Red Cross centers, and merging branches isn’t just happening in the Golden Triangle.
The Clay/Chickasaw Red Cross branch that was located on Court Street in West Point until a few months ago is no longer in existence, but services for Clay and Chickasaw County residents are still being conducted out of the Lowndes County Red Cross . Clay/Chickasaw County residents needing assistance can still call 662-494-9599, and calls will be directed to the Lowndes County office.
Tucker said the Northeast Mississippi Red Cross Board is still looking at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport area as a possible location to have one centralized Red Cross branch to service the entire Golden Triangle. She said because the airport is centrally located between Clay, Oktibbeha and Lowndes Counties, it would be an ideal spot for the new Golden Triangle Red Cross office.
The Northeast Mississippi Red Cross Chapter covers 16 counties that includes the Golden Triangle counties and Chickasaw County.
Tucker said having one service area for the Golden Triangle would not inconvenience people who need the services of Red Cross but live outside of the Red Cross office location. She said readiness response coordinators, staff and volunteers would go to the individual’s home who is needing assistance and disaster sites instead of the individual having to drive all the way to Lowndes or Oktibbeha Counties to get assistance from the Red Cross.
