Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Upsilon Pi Omega chapter of Starkville are doing their part for the West Point community by sponsoring the “Head to Heels” Health Fair from 9 – 11 a.m. at the North Mississippi Medical Center Wellness Center.
“This is an all inclusive health fair,” Sherrell Drake, AKA Sorority member, said. “We will have something for all ages, ‘Healthworks!’ of Tupelo is bringing an inflatable, there will be ‘Mom and Me’ Zumba classes for the moms and daughters and ‘TaeKwon – Dad’ for fathers and sons. There will be health screenings, healthy food demonstrations and plenty of fun ways to learn to be healthy.”
AKAS chapter is based in Starkville, but members are community minded and want to include West Point as well, Drake said. The sorority has sponsored the fair in West Point every other year for 10 years, according to Drake, because there is no chapter in West Point.
“This is our largest community outreach project of the year,” Drake said. “During our 2012 event we serviced more than 80 people, we hope to have more involved this year. It’s something we can do that everyone can benefit from. Everything is free and we want people to take advantage of what we offer to make West Point healthier.”
A registered dietician will give healthy snacks demonstrations, Drake said, and participants may join a power lifting competition. Mary Kay Cosmetics will be on hand to offer facials in addition to other vendors providing goods and services.
