Civic-minded individuals gathered with We Care Committee Director Luezarah "Lou" Robinson Tuesday to help dish out free goodies to the needy.
The giveaway has been a long-driving endeavor Robinson has toiled diligently with in an effort to spread some level of cheer to individuals who lack the means to consistently keep stock of essential necessities.
Robinson said responding to the call to arms was a might granted to her by her deeply rooted faith in God.
"We started praying and God just led me to it," said Robinson. "It's a long story, but that's how it got started with a group of ministers.
"It's what God wants us to do," Robinson added. "I want to be a part of helping people in times of need. That's what each of us are supposed to share with — we're supposed to be a part of it. Some people don't think like that. The bible says to give and love one another,"
And for nearly 8 years, Robinson has provided the same level of assistance to individuals in Sturgis, Starkville and West Point. Of course, that's not to say citizens from satellite areas were stripped of access.
"I try to be fair," said Robinson. " ... We try to do what we can for everybody. We try to stick that — I want to help the needy people, not the people just going by."
As of about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Robinson said she had served nearly 300 families. The traffic, Robinson said, was sporadic, but morning brought the heaviest load of families.
The organization dished out crackers, snacks, cookies and tea to individuals deemed a beneficiary to receive supplies as per an application which gauged just how important the supplies would be.
And, overall, it was a fairly pain-free affair.
