Supervisors to appoint new county Volunteer Fire Coordinator

January 7, 2013

The Clay County Board of Supervisors convened on Monday morning, which was the first meeting of 2013 for the board.
As with any first of the year meetings involving the county board, much of the meeting was consumed with the business of re-hiring and appointing county employees for 2013.
The board itself voted for its 2013 president and vice president. District 4 Supervisor Shelton Deanes will fill the position as board President, and District 5 Supervisor Floyd McKee will serve as the board’s Vice President this year.
The lone county position that was not filled during the meeting was the post for the County’s Volunteer Fire Coordinator, which had been filled by Bill Blankenship since February, 2000.
The issue was tabled during the open meeting, but it was brought up again during the board’s Executive Session as a personnel issue.
Clay County Chancery Clerk Amy Berry said on Monday afternoon that McKee motioned not to fill the position as of now, and District 3 Supervisor R.B. Davis gave the motion a second.
Deanes joined Davis and McKee in voting in favor of the motion, while District 1 Supervisor Lynn Horton and District 2 Supervisor Luke Lummas both voted against it.
“They will need to fill the position,” said Berry, who added that the board intends to hire a new person for the position which oversees the coordination of all of the county’s volunteer fire departments. Right now, Berry said the board has voted to explore other options.
