Reporter’s note: Daily Times Leader’s sports section will take a look at various parks which service the West Point community. West Point’s Jesse W. Harmon Sportsplex is set to host the 2014 Dizzy Dean U-8 South State Tournament, starting Thursday, July 10. The multiple-part series in the DTL Sunday sports section will look at ideas of improvement and also showcase new additions.
West Point’s Jesse W. Harmon Sportsplex will be bustling Thursday through Sunday. With the first pitches at 10 a.m. Thursday, 16 teams are set to compete for baseball glory in the U-8 Dizzy Dean South State Tournament.
The four-day, double-elimination tournament was awarded by the Mississippi Dizzy Dean Organization (MDDO) to the city in March. West Point Parks and Recreation (WPPR) Director James Crowley said maintenance and administrative needs are moving in the right direction for a great tournament.
“Preparation has gone well,” Crowley said. “We have known it has been coming for a couple of months. We have maintained the fields, mowing and weed-eating. Administratively, we have been scheduling and contacting coaches to ensure the tournament runs smoothly.”
The Sportsplex is a 12-field facility that sits off of North Eshman Avenue on the northeast side of West Point. The fields host City League youth baseball during the spring, and adult slow-pitch softball during July and August.
