Special: WPSD Superintendent McDonald addresses community on Connecticut shooting

December 17, 2012

At a time of the year when we are thinking about the joy of Christmas and looking forward to sharing with family and friends the holiday cheer, our country mourns the loss of innocent children and adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
As superintendent and a parent, I too immediately think about what ifs as it applies to students and faculty safety in our schools. I assure you the parents and community that student safety is our number one goal.
Each school has a safety/crisis plan that covers procedures taken in times of emergency. Our crisis plans are reviewed, amended and practiced throughout the school year. We appreciate the tremendous support that we receive from our local police, sheriff, fire and emergency departments in the implementation of our safety/emergency plans.
As we begin our holiday break, I pray for the many families in Newtown, Connecticut and pray that the boys and girls in all of our schools and schools in the surrounding areas have a safe and blessed holiday season.
