As of 11:35, March 17, 2021, West Point is under a Tornado Watch until 7 p.m.

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has a checklist for a severe weather plan. Make sure you and your family have a severe weather plan in place.

Currently, there are three tornado sirens down in West Point city limits (Deerfield Circle, Hwy 50 West near West Wood 1, and Bugg Street), so it is especially pertinent to not rely completely on hearing the sirens. Keep up with news coverage from local meteorologists on television or with a weather radio.

We will also update our Facebook as weather information comes in.

The fire stations on Brame Avenue and Dunlap Road each have a small shelter for those who need. Most shelters are not pet friendly, but if you need to make arrangements around a pet, the vet school at Mississippi State University is allowing those with pets to seek shelter there. The pets must be in a kennel, or if the dog is friendly, it must be on a leash. You must call ahead to the vet school to let them know - 662-325-3432.

For more about the severe weather, see the staff report in today's copy of DTL.
