Senior Diamond Raiders honored

September 22, 2010

Monday night was bitter-sweet for the four members of the Oak Hill Academy Diamond Raider softball team.
The crowd, which was on hand to watch the varsity team be beaten by Hebron 11-0, also had to say good-bye to the team’s four seniors who have played so well for the Lady Raiders.
Abby Falkner, Anne Stevens, Mary Helon Hays and Paige Dawkins were presented roses and honored with their parents between the varsity and junior varsity games with Hebron.
“They have been a lot of fun to coach,” said Oak Hill head coach Marion Bratton, who has coached the team for four years. “They are very receptive to being coached, and I’m going to miss them.”
Ellis has been a starter for Bratton since the seventh grade. Hays has been with the team for four years.
Dawkins and Stevens have been starters for two-plus seasons.
“I told the B-Team yesterday in the dugout that they better step it up, because we have to replace those four girls,” Bratton said.
Bratton added that each of the four girls have played wherever he has asked them to play, even out of position at when necessary.
The loss would prove to be the final time the girls would play together in a regular season match-up.
They will all be together this weekend, with the start of the playoffs happening in Louisville. The Lady Raiders will play Kirk at 9 a.m. that morning.
Last Monday, Dawkins, Stevens, Falkner and Hays all helped their team clinch the No. 2 spot in their district, securing a spot in the playoffs.
Dawkins capped a five-run third, with a two-run home run.
