Sammy J Smith, age 74 died Nov. 18, 2013, at his home in Starkville.
He was a long-time merchant and owner of Smith & Byars Clothiers in Starkville, one of the oldest men’s clothing shops in continuous operation in Mississippi.
Sammy J. Smith was born in West Point, June 24, 1939, the son of Joseph Harry Smith and Frances Stokes Smith. His family moved to Starkville in 1944 where his father co-founded Smith & Byars Men’s Wear. He graduated from Starkville High School and attended Mississippi State University where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He served in various civic organizations and was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church serving as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Treasurer and Board Member of the of Starkville District Parsonage for 14 years. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Cadence Bank and its predecessors for 38 years, a member of Starkville Rotary Club for 29 years, a Paul Harris Fellow, Life Loyal Sig, a founding member of the vocal group The Stanzas and president and vice president of Starkville Downtown Business Association.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bonnie Thompson Smith; daughters: Karen Smith Carter and husband John, Conifer, Colo.; Holly Smith Flexer and husband Walt, Denver, Colo.; son Jefferson Dupree Smith, Germantown, Tenn.; and two grandsons Jake Hamilton Carter and Cole Michael Carter, Conifer, Colo.; brother, Stokes Smith, West Point; and preceded in death by his parents and sister, Peggy Smith Dupuy, Jackson.
Visitation is from 1:30 - 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2013. at First United Methodist Church. The memorial service will follow with Rev. Bob Whiteside, Dr. William Giles Lindley and Dr. Prentiss Gordon officiating.
Following the memorial service, the burial will be held for the immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to a charity of one’s choice.
