Sally Kate Winters Family Services will host its fifth annual Spring Into Action 5K and Family Fun Run on April 5.
Sally Kate Outreach Coordinator Heather Usry said that organization chose to do its 5K and Fun Run in April because April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
“We want to bring awareness to the community about child abuse. How to spot it and how to reach out,” Usry said. “We want to impart on everyone in our community that it’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure we do everything we can to protect children.”
Usry said the 5K and Fun Run is the biggest fundraiser that SKW hosts for programs and services. The funds raised support the emergency shelter, transitional living, and runaway and homeless youth program, as well as services the organization offers to children who have been exposed to some form of abuse.
“A lot of times when you start bringing up the topic of child abuse prevention, their first impulse is to ask what they can do to help,” Usry said. “This is what they can do.”
She said SKW has had lots of support from the community in terms of sponsorship, but they are looking for more registrations for the 5K.
