Run-Off Between Coleman and Porter Appears Imminent

November 3, 2010

A tight three-way race for the newly-created Place 3 Circuit Court seat culminated on Tuesday night, with local attorneys Lee Coleman and Nebra Porter appearing to be destined for a runoff.
The seat covers the 4-county area of Lowndes, Clay, Noxubee and Oktibbeha, and the three candidates – Coleman, Porter, and local attorney Bob Marshall – were in a dead heat for most of the night, though Coleman used big showings in Lowndes and Oktibbeha to win the popular vote, though he didn't earn the required 50+ percent needed to win outright.
Though results from Noxubee County were unavailable by press time, Coleman received the most votes while Porter looked on track to narrowly edge West Point attorney Bob Marshall for second place.
With all 14 precincts reporting, Marshall carried Clay County, topping Porter by a scant 123 votes. As of 11 p.m., absentee and affidavit votes were still be counted at the Clay County Courthouse.
Porter said despite a possible run-off, she's still confidence as a candidate in the race and said she is continuing to keep her word of making sure she serves the people impartially and with fairness.
“If that's what it is, I'm up for the challenge, and I'm still wanting to work for community to ensure justice for all,” Porter said.
In Clay County, Coleman had 2227 votes, Marshall had 2398 votes and Porter had 2238 votes. In Oktibbeha County, Coleman had 3572 votes, Marshall had 2959 and Porter had 2573. In Lowndes County Marshall had 6685 votes, Marshall had 4154 and Porter had 4541votes.
In the First Congressional District race for Clay County, Congressman Travis Childers won Clay County by 1,413 votes, but the support from Clay County was not enough to win him the seat.
James Kitchens, was running against William Starks, won the Circuit Court Judge-Place 1 position by 1,011 votes.
Official results from the elections as well as results of other races will be available in Thursday's Daily Times Leader.
