Raiders battling heat first week of practice

July 26, 2011

Oak Hill Academy head football coach Benjie Merchant is getting excited about his first season with the Raiders. Despite the heat during the first week of practice, the players he said, have adjusted well.

“Can’t be more pleased with them,” Merchant said. “They’ve done everything we’ve asked all through the summer up until now.”

The Raiders have been working out twice a day, with a morning workout before putting on the helmets for an hour and half session in the afternoon. Temperatures this week have been in the mid to upper 90’s,

MAIS mandates players cannot wear pads until Thursday, so for the first few days the coaching staff have been going through the motions of basic drills with lineman, receivers, running backs and the quarterbacks.

The team can be in full gear starting Monday.

The players are starting to get a little anxious anticipating another season under the Friday night lights.

“I’m excited,” Merchant said. “This kind of stuff is boring right now because it’s a lot of repetitions but it’s good for what they need to do. “

Merchant said the players are starting to get back into the routines of showing up to practice and finally getting all of that summer relaxation out of their systems.

“I hope a new momentum, a new enthusiasm will get going once school starts back up,” he said.

The Raiders open the season at home against Newton Academy August 19.
