Pursuit ends in cocaine arrest

February 28, 2014

A routine traffic stop turned into much more for Clay County Sheriff’s Deputies Wednesday evening.
According to a CCSD statement, deputies arrested Michael Melton, 38, of West Point Wednesday on charges of cocaine possession with intent to distribute and felony fleeing after Melton allegedly fled from a traffic stop. Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said at about 6:15 p.m., police pursued Melton through the streets of West Point for about 10 minutes, which ended only when police pulled a “pit maneuver,” spinning Melton’s vehicle out at the intersection of South Eshman and Churchill Street.
“We were hoping he’d head on out to the county out of city limits away from traffic,” Scott said. “He tried to turn back on Division Street though, and that’s when we made the decision to go ahead and spin him out. It was a clear area with no traffic in sight.”
