Pack the stands at New Hope: West Point hoops braces for the Trojans

February 12, 2013

West Point will have more than their hands full when they travel over to New Hope High School tonight.
The Green Wave, under the direction of head coach Brad Cox, will have to enter into enemy territory for opening round play of the district 2 5-A tournament. Not only will the gym be unfamiliar, but it is also the home gym of the New Hope Trojans, the Wave’s opening round opponent.
In the previous meeting between the two sides, West Point’s front court got into foul trouble during the first half forcing the Wave to have to go small against the Trojans. New Hope took full advantage of a more guard-centric West Point and home court advantage, defeating their guest 64-54.
The Wave have struggled at times on the road. Yet having played in plenty of hostile environments, West Point is battle tested and hoping the final two road games of the regular season will have them ready to tackle the district tournament first round. The Wave hit the road three times in the final week of the regular season playing Oxford, Houston, and Noxubee County.
“When we did the schedule, we looked at the week before the district tournament,” commented Coach Cox during a post game interview last Tuesday, “the two teams we wanted to play non-district were Houston, physical and a great fan base and Noxubee County, a fast team and a rivalry game.”
After surviving those two gyms, West Point feels that it has learned a lot of lesson about playing on someone else’s court.
The Wave will also need to focus on their start to the game. Typically West Point has dug a hole early forcing a comeback throughout the whole contest. Coach Cox and his team will need to figure out some way to prevent a slow start in tonight’s ball game or risk falling behind a hometown favored New Hope.
The Trojans will enter tonight’s match-up after a 64-54 victory over Noxubee on February 5 in non-district action.
Tonight’s ball game is set to tip-off at 8:30 at New Hope High School. Coach Cox asks that all West Point faithful able to make the trip across to New Hope do so in support of the Green Wave basketball team.
