The Oxford Chargers (16-7; 3-1 District 2-5A) kept the game close throughout the night, but it was the final four minutes of the 32-minute game that lifted them to victory over the West Point Green Wave Friday night in West Point.
“We had the lead, and we get behind,” Oxford Head Coach Drew Tyler said. “We overcame late turnovers, and it is a good thing to win like this late in the season. This game was a good measuring stick for our team to be able to win on the road.”
An easy offensive put back by Josh Gibbs and a Shelby McEwen make after breaking a Green Wave full-court press solidified the win for the Chargers, 58-55, in the MHSAA District 2-5A game.
“We answered some of their runs in the first half,” Tyler said. “Late in the game, we were able to get it done. I am proud of our guys for staying aggressive. It’s a good thing that we are that disciplined to stay aggressive.
“Winning here is something new for our younger players,” Tyler added.
Gibbs led Oxford with his 18 points, and McEwen added 17 points with nine rebounds in the Chargers second win over West Point. The Chargers defeated the Wave on Jan. 21 in Oxford, 53-48.
“We came together as a team and finished this win off,” McEwen said. “We started this season off slow; we’ve played hard and to the best of our ability to win ball games.”
West Point’s A.J. Jones attempted late-game heroics with less than a minute remaining. The senior point guard knocked down a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left, cutting the deficit to two points, 55-53. Oxford answered quickly with McEwen’s final basket on the other end, 57-53.
