The Christmas season has officially kicked off in West Point, as evidenced by the annual downtown Christmas Open House held this weekend.
Shops throughout the city brought out their finest holiday decor and offered refreshments and door prizes to those hoping to get a leg up on their holiday shopping. Cynthia Wilson, director for the West Point Growth Alliance said all in all, the weekend turned out well for local businesses, particularly with the addition of a second day. While previously held only on a Sunday, in an effort to capture local spending, this year’s event was expanded to include Saturday, as well.
“A lot of people commented that they liked it being on Saturday this year, too,” Wilson said. “They had time to see more and shop a little more. ... One of the biggest challenges I’ve heard from merchants is getting people to buy local — and that’s not just here, that’s everywhere.”
