Oak Hill Academy is nearing the final stages of its search for a new elementary school principal and new girlsâ€™ basketball coach.
The new hires are to replace Oak Hill elementary principal Jane Rives and basketball coach Stan Hughey. Rivesâ€™ contract was not renewed for the next school year and Hughey resigned.
Oak Hill Headmaster Yandell Harris said he couldnâ€™t discuss the specifics as of Wednesday but that the school hopes to announce its new elementary principal by May 2.
â€śWe want somebody whoâ€™s led an elementary school, is highly thought of and has done various things within an elementary program setting,â€ť Harris said.
He said the school wants the best candidate available and that hopefully by the end of this school year Oak Hill will have a new principal.
Rives began teaching at Oak Hill when the school was founded in 1966 and the elementary school is named after her.
Harris said in the March 30 edition of Daily Times Leader that while Rives was a pillar of the Oak Hill community, he believed it was best to bring new ideas to the school.
â€śSheâ€™s been on the job for 48 years, and when youâ€™ve been at a job so long you may run a good school but you get in the same old routines,â€ť he said. â€śSheâ€™s done a fantastic job, but at the same time there are new ideas in education and we want to look at those.â€ť
Former Oak Hill teacher Mary Barnhill, along with six other Oak Hill parents and grandparents, went before Harris and the Oak Hill School Board at its meeting Tuesday to speak on behalf of Rives.
