Sometimes it’s the little things that do the most damage. That was certainly the case Thursday night for the Oak Hill Raiders in a 44-41 loss to Kirk Academy. Turnovers and free-throw shooting plagued the young team in a contest with plenty of opportunities to pull out the win. The Raiders gave the ball away 22 times, while only shooting 15-30 from the charity stripe.
While they were successful in driving the paint and drawing fouls, the failure to convert enough of the freebies proved to be the difference in the game. In another half-court tempo game, neither team could manage easy shots or get into a flow. Foul trouble for the Raiders’ key players put several young guys in a tough position in such a tight game.
John Wesley Williamson led the Raiders in scoring with 10 points on the night. J.J. Bridges, Drew Riley, and Jacob Dickens scored seven points a piece. Matthew Gwathney poured in five points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench while Jeb Stevens and Riley Pierce both scored two. Drake Riley rounded up the scoring for Oak Hill with one point.
The Raiders, now 5-2 on the year, face off against top-ranked Marshall Academy in a Saturday matchup at home. Junior High action tips off at 1 p.m.
