Oak Hill senior returns from neck injury to play basketball

December 6, 2012

The football field at North Delta School grew eerily quiet; an Oak Hill player had gone down and did not look like he was getting back up. The opening round MAIS AA playoff game had been paused to attend to the fallen player. Soon the realization that an ambulance and helicopter had been called made the situation even more desperate.
On a routine tackle, Jeb Stevens found himself injured, a situation he never expected.
“I did not know what to think,” commented Stevens, “When they said it was severe enough to bring a helicopter, it really scared me.”
After a frightening Friday night, Stevens was diagnosed with a sprain between his C-6 and C-7 vertebrae. Stevens’ doctors did not see the sprain as serious as it could have been and only put Stevens in a neck brace.
“They told me to wear the brace,” said Stevens about his therapy and recovery, “I did therapy for two and half weeks and have eased back into practice.”
Stevens, a Senior at Oak Hill, played an important part in the Raiders’ football season. Stevens played both sides of the ball featuring as a Middle Linebacker and Wingback in Oak Hill’s turn-around season.
Now that it is basketball season, Stevens has returned to the court, rebounding from his injury and is playing in the low post.
Stevens has a positive outlook on the basketball season.
“I think we can be successful in district,” anticipated Stevens about basketball season, “We will have some challenges, but I know we can get district.”
Stevens’ quick recovery is truly a miracle since he has been able to return to athletics so quickly.
Others have not been as fortunate and Jeb will definitely take full advantage of his situation.
“It’s crazy. I feel like I’m lucky,” commented Stevens about recovering from his injury, “I know a bunch of people who have had a more severe injury and have not been able to return to play.”
